I fixed holes in the bottom of a boat with the product. I learned about this product from the Aluminum-Weld youtube channel. I do some soldering on copper pipe and welding at basic level. This product worked great. I did cover the welds with an epoxy filler just so it would look nice after painting. Someone who is better at brazing/welding/grinding will probably be able to get a smooth surface just with the rods. The boat is a family heirloom. I am glad to get it back in the water and fish with my kids.

Took a bit to get the hang of the flow. Learned the second time around it is like putting on drywall mud. The more you try to improve it to look better the worse it gets. The product worked well when I checked it under a light for any holes. Pictures of before and after it was filed down then painted.

Looks like you did a vertical repair and it turned out pretty well for your first one. Vertical is more difficult than overhead or flat but follow the instructions and practice. A video of a similar repair https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhfWqD8Iawo

The rods worked as stated but my boat was to thin to weld or I got the aluminum too hot cause it buckled as I was heating it.

    • Randall Gasser

Hi Adrian, I posted a video that addresses this issue. Go to youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld and watch the Heat Control video. Also sometimes aluminum will warp when heated. Hope this helps.

I give it a 3 because its not quite as easy as they make it out to be, I used it on a aluminium AC condenser on a car that had rubbed thur against steel cleaned it well an it stuck well to one side tough to get it to stick to the other so it worked so far but not really sure ot the integrity of the braze. time will tell. I used propane and that is alittle under temp to make this work. MAPP or oxy acetlyene would probably be better and easier to get the base material hot enough to spread it and get a bond. Ill try again with either of those and report back.

The rods were all broken from being transported in an envelope that was too small and had no protective edges or anything to keep them from being crushed or broken during their journey.

    • Kerri Gasser

Thank you for your feedback. We had to change our packaging due to shipping issues that came about due to COVID-19. USPS has delayed and piled up first class mail which contributed to rod breaking during shipping. We now are shipping in a protective package.

They work fine, however 3 of the 4 I’ve used were broken in half when I pulled them from the package tube.

    • Randall Gasser

Due to COVID 19 packages are getting stacked up and the 8 packs were getting broken. We now ship in a protective sleeve. Also you can put the pieces back together as well as use the short ends by putting both ends together and heating until they melt, let cool and you now have a long rod with no waste.

The order of the brazing rods came pretty quick with in a week of purchasing them online and usually take couple of weeks living here in alaska. I purchased after looking online from one of the posts and wanted to try them out. Living here in alaska we use the riveted aluminum lund boats all summer long and on 3 rivets that had a little crack on the boat sure helped a lot! No more leaks and will be purchasing more in the future when i need them!

Sorry to hear that the Rods were broken. We appreciate your feedback. This year the Post Office has had shipping delays and more packages have been stacked causing the breakage. We are constantly trying to improve our packaging procedures. Any additional information or pictures is appreciated.. You can heat the rods and put them back together so that way there is no left over pieces. 100 % of the rods are usable.

Did not bond to bare aluminum very well in my experience wanted to bead and collect on surface instead of bonding to surface. Only way i was able to get it to fill the 1/8” hole was getting material bead on surface and taking a steel piece of metal to push it flat against the aluminum

    • Randall Gasser (store manager)

Hi Dustin, What you are describing to me is the aluminum was not up to 735 degrees F. or the aluminum was contaminated. I am guessing that you had to add heat to the steel for the bond. I use steel as you did for overhead and vertical jobs. I have videos showing this technique at youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld. Also I can be called for questions. Thanks for your review as they help us all and I plan to add a video to youtube showing these issues. YouTube Video link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INhPrY4X6Ts

aluminum melted before rod did now i have a bigger hole in my boat !

    • Randall Gasser

Hi Steve, That should never happen because the aluminum melts at around 1230 degrees F. and the HTS-735-11 rod melts at 735 Degrees F. about 500 degrees lower temperature. I am guessing that you took a long time between checking the aluminum temperature with the HTS-735-11 Rod.(YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INhPrY4X6Ts&t=27s) You must check the aluminum temperature every couple of seconds as the aluminum will not change color and give you any indication of temperature, or you just tried to guess at the temperature without using the HTS-735-11 Rod as your the temperature guide. I have made two videos that address this, one is on the side of a soda can ” (YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=odC0EeO5h4U&t=11s) that is thin aluminum” and with proper heat control I was able to get the HTS-735-11 Rod to melt without burning a hole in the can. Now if the HTS-735-11 Rod can do that, then thicker aluminum should be and is much easier to repair. As for the larger hole, I show how to make and install a patch for holes larger than 3/8inch in my Pontoon repair video(YouTube Link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LB8qw-u9XVI&t=607s). All my videos can be found at youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld

I bought the product primarily to repair the bottom of an aluminum boat and it performed exactly as promised. No complaints! But before doing that, however, as a test, I tried joining two 1/8 inch plates together perpendicularly (following the printed instructions) and was disappointed when they broke apart will very little effort. I called the 800 number, explained what I’d done (and how) and got some tips on how to improve the “weld”. I followed the advice and got a far superior result, so technique has a lot to do with it. The fact that the product works and that they are there to help has me sold on the product and the company.

It did take a while to get used to the way it puddles up and works much better/easier on a flat surface. Vertical is much more difficult. But all in all it worked just as stated and saved me $280 on a new prop.

I attempted too large of a repair. There was a crack along the bottom of a seam weld. I couldn’t get the aluminum hot enough using mapp gas so I tried oxy-acetylene. Due to my lack of experience, I mistakenly burned a thumb-sized hole in the bottom of the pontoon drum. I paid a welder to make the repair. I will attempt using the rods again, but on a smaller bench-top repair. A 23′ pontoon is too much aluminum for a novice.

Love this stuff. Ok so I am the dumbass who took their boat out on the river when it was too low. Finding a prop that matches can be difficult. I tinned the back side first, this is a must! I also used Oxy / Acetylene with a number 4 rosebud. It got hot enough in seconds. Be careful with the heat, aluminum will melt away in seconds if you hold the torch in one place too long.
As you can see in the pictures this rod filled 2 large chunks and a crack on another blade. I only used 2 1/2 rods. Great stuff!

Rods don’t melt as easy as advertised. Both MAP and Propane gas wouldn’t heat the metal hot enough. Only an oxy/acetalene torch would do it. I would never purchase these ever again.

    • Randall Gasser (store manager)

      Hi Jared,
The HTS-735-11 Rods melt at 735 degrees F. If the metal is below that temperature the rods will not melt. So there is NO guess work. The metal will be at least 735 degrees F when the rod is melted by the heated aluminum. Sound like you followed the instructions and had to move up to oxy/acetylene in order to get your aluminum up to that temperature. Working on small light aluminum requires much less heat, larger or thicker objects will require more heat. That is how all heating of metal will work. I addressed this topic on my youtube channel at
youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld watch the Pontoon Repair and Weld Aluminum at Home. Also my Blog at aluminum-weld.com Thanks for your feedback as it will help others understand.

Your product would melt to aluminum patch but would would not to the aluminum boat it didn’t work.

    • Smith Blanche (store manager)

      Hi Dave,
The patch is a small mass of aluminum, the boat is many times larger and will require more time or heat to reach 735 degrees. Both the boat and patch MUST be heated to 735 degrees for the rod to bond. Always heat the larger mass first and test with the rod to determine when 735 degrees is reached. I have over twenty videos at yputube.com/c/aluminum-weld.

    • Randall Gasser (store manager)

Sound like you got the patch up to 735 degrees but not the boat. Always heat the larger mass first as it will require more heat and time to reach the correct temperature. The HTS-735-11 rod works on all aluminum once the 735 degree temperature is reached. Videos at youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld

Extremely disappointed in the product total waste of money

    • Randall Gasser (store manager)

You can always call if you are having problems getting the rod to work. I am guessing you were working the rod in or too close to the torch. I have just posted a video show how to join two pieces of 3″ irrigation pipe on my youtube channel youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld {Joining 3″ Irrigation Pipe} this should answer most of your questions. The rod will NOT stick to the aluminum if the aluminum is below the melting point of the rod. If the torch melts the rod instead of the heated aluminum all bets are off.

We used the brazing rods to solder a whole in a seam in a pontoon on our boat. Two weeks in the water and the patch is holding. The entire experience has been very good; from ordering to receiving and the actual product.

Had a 1/8″ hole in my aluminum canoe. Couldn’t get it hot enough with my propane torch, so after watching a youtube video I used map gas and it worked great. Seems like a strong permanent patch.

I had to fix four 4-6 in cracks on the bottom of my jonboat. The material is excellent but there is a learning curve. Even with the experience of working with my hands and with with a variety of materials, it took a little time to learn and get used to it. There are some points to keep in mind and that can come in handy:
    1) 25 rods may be enough for a job as the one I described as long as you have some previous experience with using this; otherwise, do yourself a favor and order at least 50 from the get go, so that you avoid having to wait for the arrival of a second shipment
    2) it is worth having the working area level and avoid working upside down. Since the heat rises, it will be harder to control it on the surface of the metal and is more likely to cause warping of the aluminum. Although the rods can be used upside down and vertically, the heat and flow of the material as much harder to control
    3) in order for the rod alloy to stick to the aluminum, they both need reach a certain temperature. Melted rod material, will NOT stick to aluminum if the aluminum is not hot enough
    4) cracks can happen to the added rod alloy due to expansion and contraction. This is easily fixed by incorporating new material. When adding new material the temperature will not need to be as high since you are only melting rod alloy to patch it on top of existing rod alloy. Also, a thicker layer of rod alloy definitely helps prevent cracking as the material cools.
    5) the alloy oxidizes fast, turning dull grey within a few hours. If you need to add another layer after a longer interval, you will need to prep the area again remove the oxide.

Pontoon log repair. Reinforced some previous welds that were showing signs of minor leakage. Fortunately, It was in a non-pressurized center toon cavity and I was able to access the weld from inside/above to put gravity on my side. Worked great, took a while to heat, but once the proper temp was reached i was very successful. Not sure could have done from below looking up! Thank you.

I originally needed to fills holes in back of my 1972 StarCraft aluminum boat. It took about 10 minutes to heat to melting temperature, but work as expected. I used a propane torch. I will try using MAPP gas torch next time.

I have not been able to get the aluminum hot enough to melt the brazing rods. I tried propane and Mapp gas and still could not get enough heat. I burned a tank of each. The temperature outside was 55 degrees, no wind. I may either have to wait for warmer temps or try and rent an acetalene torch.

Joseph, Sound like you’re following the instructions heating the aluminum, not the rod. You may benefit watching my youtube video “Torch Tips Heat Control. This link at youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld . Different torch tips can make a big difference.

Jim, Some projects I have had to have a friend help by using two torches. I have a video on youtube.com/c/aluminum-weld that discusses torch tips, Propane, and Mapp Gas.

Saved my aluminum boat, it had some pitting that actually made it through the hull. HTS-735 ll worked very well, way better than the previous brand I had bought. Great product.

Heating the prop made the rubber hub separate. Bought a map gas torch because propane wouldn’t heat it after an hour. Map gas less than a minute. Now spent more money on rod, torch, and hub than a new prop would cost. Would definitely add a heat shield to a prop to protect the rubber if you attempt.

Reheated, was able to build it up. Used a dabbing motion and it worked. Thanks for the advice. Just had to not overheat the aluminum like you said.

I haven’t used the welding rods yet at this time but the shipment was great ,they came in protective tube and were not destroyed through shipment. They are also decent size rods not like ones I have bought somewhere else.I’m sure they will work great .time will tell
